In this painting, the artist portrays the Dhamek Stupa as a symbol of the Buddha, with his hands in the teaching pose. The stupa marks the location where the Buddha delivered his first sermon, known as the Dhamma Chakra Pravartan (the turning of the wheel of Dharma), to his first five disciples. The Dhamma Chakra is depicted as the Buddha’s halo, and its eight spokes represent the eightfold path to enlightenment. The stupa stands in Sarnath, and was built in 500 BC to replace an earlier structure commissioned by Emperor Ashoka.
